THINK B is the American Liver Foundation's nationwide hepatitis B program for Asian Americans, who have the highest rates of chronic hepatitis B infection among all ethnic groups in the United States and are at high risk for liver cancer.

The American Liver Foundation (ALF) offers professional education programs for healthcare providers including general practitioners, gastroenterologists and others, who serve Asian Americans and other patients who might be at risk for hepatitis B.

The goals of this program are to:

  1. increase awareness of hepatitis B risk factors and prevention strategies among Asian Americans;
  2. emphasize the importance of screening and testing for the hepatitis B virus within the Asian community;
  3. understand the available treatment options for chronic hepatitis B infection.

The Think B professional education programs focus on these five major topic areas:

  • Epidemiology and disease burden - global, in the US, and among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders
  • Testing and prevention
  • Screening, testing and diagnosis
  • Natural history - phases of chronic infection; risk of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and other adverse outcomes
  • Care and treatment of patients with hepatitis B - monitoring necessary for patients not receiving treatment, safety and efficacy of approved treatments, treatment options and potential for new treatment options

Under the leadership of Anna S. Lok, MD and Eddie Cheung, MD, Think B education materials were developed. Other medical experts including Ray Kim, MD; Albert Min, MD; Ke-Qin Hu, MD; Myron Tong, MD; and Daryl Lau, MD contributed to the development of these materials.
