Approximately one in ten Asian Americans is chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The virus is especially common in Southeast Asia. Many people are unaware that they are infected with HBV and can unknowingly infect others.
Many patients infected with the hepatitis B virus have no signs or symptoms of the disease. The only way to positively identify the infection is by a blood test.
Vaccination can prevent hepatitis B infection and early detection can help prevent its spread. In high-risk groups, including Asian Americans, all ages should be tested.
